Bahrain's ministry of housing embarked on a journey of creating much-needed social housing for Bahrainis through al madina al shamaliya project. By reclaiming the sea off the coast of the northern villages of bahrain extending from budaiya through diraz and up to barbar, it will provide a mix of single family homes and social apartments buildings to bahrainis. The project at hand is the first social set of apartment buildings designed on the islands on island 14, funded by the state of Kuwait.
The Ministry of Housing intended to deploy two prototypes across five sites. The intent was to reduce both design and construction cost by having a limited number of building types. This resulted in the exploration of several apartment layouts, in several building types and their deployment across several sites resulting in the above exploration.
